چکیده

Editor’s key points † Several factors that influence intracranial pressure (ICP) also influence intraocular pressure (IOP). † Injections into the epidural space can cause cerebrospinal fluid shifts into the cranial space. † This has the potential to increase ICP and IOP. † The authors studied the effect of cervical epidural injections (14 ml) on IOP. Background. Cervical epidural injection (CEI) is widely performed on patients with intervertebral disc herniation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the shortterm effects of CEI on non-invasive intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements in subjects with normal eyes.

Short-term changes of intraocular pressure after cervical interlaminar epidural injection: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND Cervical epidural injection (CEI) is widely performed on patients with intervertebral disc herniation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the short-term effects of CEI on non-invasive intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements in subjects with normal eyes. METHODS This prospective study enrolled 15 patients who were undergoing CEI at the C5/6 level with an interlaminar ap...

Epidural steroids in the management of chronic spinal pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND Epidural injection of corticosteroids is one of the most commonly used interventions in managing chronic spinal pain. However, there has been a lack of well-designed randomized, controlled studies to determine the effectiveness of epidural injections. Consequently, debate continues as to the value of epidural steroid injections in managing spinal pain. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the eff...

Cervical Interlaminar Epidural Steroid Injection for Unilateral Cervical Radiculopathy: Comparison of Midline and Paramedian Approaches for Efficacy

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of the cervical interlaminar epidural steroid injection (CIESI) for unilateral radiculopathy by the midline or paramedian approaches and to determine the prognostic factors of CIESI. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 182 patients who underwent CIESI from January 2009 to December 2012. Inclusion criteria...

Cervical Interlaminar Epidural Injections at High Doses Do Not Increase Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter on a Long-Term Basis.

BACKGROUND Cervical epidural injection (CEI) is widely performed on patients with pain originating from the cervical spine. Studies have shown a good relationship between the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and the intracranial pressure (ICP). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the ONSD as a non-invasive surrogate marker of ICP after CEI. STUDY DESIGN Prospect...

Systematic review of the effectiveness of cervical epidurals in the management of chronic neck pain.

BACKGROUND Chronic neck pain is a common problem in the adult population with a typical 12-month prevalence of 30% to 50%, and 14% of the patients reporting grade II to IV neck pain with high pain intensity and disability that has a substantial impact on health care and society. Cervical epidural injections for managing chronic neck pain are one of the commonly performed interventions in the Un...
